Airborne wind energy generators to be tested in Ireland

3 D Personnel

An RWE/Ampyx Power Partnership has received planning permission for airborne wind energy technology in Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland.  The methodology uses a “kite” like apparatus, which flies at several hundred metres, but is tied to ground-based winch generator.  As the kite moves away from the ground, the tether to which it is tied, turns the generator, thus producing low cost energy.

Construction is expected to commence during the year and the test will last 8 years.
