Highways England and Total are developing a new, so called "anti-ageing cream" for roads. The new bitumen, “Styrelf Long Life” has a slower oxidising cycle, which means that the roads crack less as they stay flexible for a longer period of time. It is expected that the facelift cycle for the roads could be extended by 50% to 66%. The new technology is currently being tested on the A43 near Silverstone in Northamptonshire and could lead to savings in cost, roadworks and ultimately, carbon emissions.
