1st Carpenter, or 1st fix as it’s often referred to in the construction industry, is usually responsible for the structural work that's carried out before the plastering of a property, which can include the wall studding, roof struts, door frames and floor joists. The 2nd carpenter, or 2nd fix, looks after the finishing work that takes place after plastering, including fixing architrave, window boards, floorboards and skirting. Both 1st and 2nd carpentry work can often be carried out by the same person.
