The Banksman is responsible for crane or large vehicle movements from the point of loading and unloading, ensuring the drivers always have a clear visibility of the loading area. They may be required to use a system of hand signals or a radio link to effectively communicate these movements. A Banksman may also be responsible for directing lorries and other plant machinery on the site, including the movements of an excavator through monitoring the bucket for any obstructions.
