Kieron Brennan of Co-operative Housing Ireland has suggested that Turn-key homes are the answer to the housing crisis. Under the Turn-key mechanism, social housing is provided by private developers at an agreed price. Mr. Brennan argues that the risk is assumed by the private developer, that more social housing will be built on private land, all of which will accelerate construction rates, thus helping the government achieve it’s objective of delivering 50,000 new social housing units by 2025.
Those who disagree, referring to recent numbers released by the Department of Housing, claim that the prices are elevated compared to houses developed by the councils themselves. Nonetheless, the figures do not specify the size, spec or timeline.
