Planning permission has been lodged for a Learning and Development Centre at Desertcreat close to Cookstown, Co. Armagh. The Fire and Rescue Service training centre, originally budgeted at £30m, but now estimated to be £42.5m, will include a training environment for collapsed buildings and below ground rescue, a specialist driving and road traffic collision training area, a swift water rescue training facility and a “call out village”. The development is the latest stage in the project, which originally opened in 2019, with initial costs of £4.8m. It is hoped that works will begin in 2022 with a view to finishing in 2024.
