Following on from the governments announcement to allocate €63.5m to the Greenways projects, this will bring the total spend on walking and cycling projects in 2021 to €360m, (€1m per day).  The Safe Routes to School programme, which will see major projects in main cities across the country, will improve walking and cycling infrastructure.  The hope is to increase the number of children, adolescents and adults who cycle or walk to school, having a direct impact on global warming, traffic congestion, and principally on health and fitness levels of the Irish population.
