Transport Infrastructure Ireland will play a leading role in inspiring Ireland’s future engineering talent by engaging with over 550 students in North Dublin during STEPS Engineers Week 2020.

Taking place from Saturday, 29 February – Friday, 6 March, STEPS Engineers Week is a campaign held annually to promote engineering as a career and the importance of the profession to Ireland. The initiative is coordinated by Engineers Ireland’s STEPS programme and supported by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and other leading industry bodies.

During Ireland’s largest celebration of engineering in the community, engineers from Transport Infrastructure Ireland will engage with eight schools along the MetroLink route to showcase to students the role of engineers and to highlight the importance of site safety and the environment through activities, presentations and hands-on learning.

Today at Our Lady of Victories Boys National School in Ballymun, where over 200 students will participate in Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s Engineers Week celebrations and activities, Linda Carroll, Stakeholder Communications Coordinator said: “Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s engineers will be central to the success of the MetroLink project and the future of Ireland’s sustainable transport network. As a strategic partner of the Engineers Ireland STEPS programme, Engineers Week 2020 is a vital initiative to inspire Ireland’s future engineering talent pipeline.  We’re delighted to work with primary and secondary school pupils throughout Engineers Week to showcase the role of TII engineers who will be central to bringing the MetroLink project to fruition over the coming years.”

Caroline Spillane, Director General of Engineers Ireland, said:  “STEPS Engineers Week will provide parents and children with the opportunity to dream, invent and create like professional engineers.  We estimate that over 5,000 new jobs will be created in the engineering sector this year, so it is absolutely crucial that industry works with the education sector to make technical areas like engineering appealing and stimulating to our students right across the education spectrum.  We are pleased that TII engineers will be reaching out to students in primary and secondary schools and Youthreach Centres to bring the fascinating world of engineering to life in classrooms right across North Dublin.”

Over 75,000 students, teachers and parents are set to engage in over 700 activities as part of the STEPS Engineers Week 2020 celebrations. To find our more or to get involved, visit: www.engineersweek.ie

The Engineers Ireland STEPS programme is also funded by Science Foundation Ireland, the Department of Education and Skills and industry leaders ARUP, ESB and Intel.
