Three firms named on £300M Hinkley Point C framework


Balfour Beatty, Murphy and Siemens have all been awarded work at Hinkley Point C as part of a £300M framework.

The project will see the construction of a 400,000 volt 57km long connection between Bridgwater and Seabank near Avonmouth. 

The works consist of 48.5km of overhead lines and 10.7km of underground cable, 8.5km of which passes through the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). 

Balfour Beatty will design, supply, install, test and commission a new overhead line spanning 48.4km of the connection, crossing through the Mendip Hills in Somerset as part of a £241M contract. 

Murphy will be constructing the 10.7km underground segment of the project, with 132kV cables from Nailsea to Portishead. While Siemens will be building a new substation at Sandford.

Hinkley Connection project director Sue Adam said the contracts were a major step forward for the project.  

“The awarding of these contracts marks a major step forward on this vital connection project,” she said. “It means that we will now be able to gear up to start construction work in earnest. We look forward to working with our new partners to deliver the many different elements of the work involved.”  

Balfour Beatty’s chief executive officer for rail and utilities Mark Bullock said Balfour Beatty was poised to play a key role in the scheme.  

“Our extensive knowledge and unique capability in delivering major complex overhead line schemes makes us ideally positioned to play a key role in helping to deliver the first nuclear power station to be built in the UK for more than 20 years,” he said. 

As part of the scheme National Grid will be removing 67km of overhead line owned by Western Power Distribution (WPD), including all pylons which currently cross the AONB. 

Works are due to commence this month, with completion expected in summer 2025.  

At construction peak, the project will employ a workforce of over 150, providing local employment as well as apprenticeship and graduate opportunities.
